WAKO India in Brief

The “WAKO India Kickboxing Federation” serves as the primary authority governing and fostering the growth of kickboxing across all age groups and styles, encompassing both male and female categories throughout India. Affiliated with International Federations operating under the Olympic Charter and Fold, it operates under the umbrella of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) International Federation, headquartered in Italy.

Under the leadership of Mr. Santosh K. Agrawal as President, and with its national office situated in Faridabad, Haryana, “WAKO India Kickboxing Federation,” commonly referred to as “WAKO INDIA,” has received official recognition from the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India, as the National Sports Federation (NSF) since July 2, 2021. This recognition has empowered WAKO India to pursue its mission of revolutionizing kickboxing in India, epitomized by the declaration of July 2nd as “National Kickboxing Day.”

As a member of WAKO (IF), recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), WAKO India has gained global prominence, with 147 countries affiliated. Through dedicated efforts, it has risen to 47th position in the world rankings and 5th in Asia among kickboxing nations.

With 34 affiliates spanning states and union territories, all registered with respective State Sports Authorities, some also recognized by State Olympic Associations, WAKO India operates in close collaboration with these entities to advance kickboxing nationwide. These affiliates, including representatives at district levels, ensure grassroots development of the sport, extending its reach even to remote areas.

WAKO India, in partnership with its affiliates, sports authorities, and state Olympic associations, organizes numerous kickboxing competitions nationwide, garnering enthusiastic participation and support, thus advancing the sport’s popularity and growth.

The successful conclusion of the 3rd India Open International Kickboxing Tournament, featuring a diverse range of events across multiple categories, held from February 7-11, 2024, marks a significant milestone. Hosted at the esteemed KD Jadhav Indoor Stadium, IG Sports Complex, New Delhi, India, the tournament symbolizes a fusion of athleticism, expertise, and global unity.

In tandem with the tournament, WAKO India takes immense pride in orchestrating the 6th WAKO International Kickboxing Referee Seminar. Attendees are invited to engage in a Gala Event, offering lucrative cash prizes and captivating awards, with participation open to both national and international contenders from over 20 countries.

Welcoming esteemed dignitaries for the first time, including Mr. Roy Baker, President of the World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) Ireland, alongside distinguished guests, among others countries, alongside national delegates, adds to the grandeur of the occasion.

Under the dynamic leadership of Mr. Santosh Kumar Agrawal, President of WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, this event embodies a testament to the commitment and passion driving the sport’s growth and excellence.

In India, kickboxing has gained recognition at both the school and university levels, being incorporated into the sports calendars of the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) and the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) respectively.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has incorporated our sport into the Khelo India program, specifically the “Khelo India Women’s Kickboxing League 2023-24.” We have already successfully concluded events in 22 cities, engaging over 10,000 female athletes.

In 2022, our athletes showcased remarkable prowess by clinching 10 medals at the Cadet & Juniors World Championship held in Italy and securing 25 medals at the Asian Kickboxing Championship held in Thailand.

Moving forward to 2023, our athletes continued to shine, earning 2 medals at the Senior World Championship held in Portugal.

In 2024, our achievement continued by winning 1 silver and 2 bronze medals at the WAKO Italian Kickboxing World Cup 2024.

Since 2017, our collective achievement has resulted in a total of 281 medals for India (comprising 81 Gold, 70 Silver, and 130 Bronze), representing a significant milestone in our nation’s history. The dedication and expertise showcased by our players and coaches have garnered immense pride and acclaim, guaranteeing their lasting legacy in the annals of Indian sports history.
